Historically the organic certification process in the US has been overseen by the USDA through the agricultural program. However, we now have a Deputy Administrator who will over see cosmetics, skin care etc. This is great news for consumers and manufacturers.
“USDA names first NOP Deputy Administrator
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on Sept. 17 announced the hiring of Miles McEvoy as the new Deputy Administrator of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) National Organic Program (NOP). McEvoy assumes his position on Oct. 1. Vilsack also announced that NOP is now an independent program area within USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) due to the increased visibility and emphasis on organic agriculture throughout the farming community, evolving consumer preferences, and the enhanced need for governmental oversight of this expanded program. Historically, NOP has been part of the Transportation and Marketing Program within AMS. OTA issued a press release welcoming McEvoy to the new position.”
