What is Ylang Ylang?

Ylang ylang (pronounced e-lang e-lang) may not be an aroma you know by name, however chances are you have encountered its sweet, floral fragrance. Perfumes and skin care products use ylang ylang as an ingredient, most noteworthy the best-selling perfume Chanel No. 5.

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Ylang ylang oil is from the flowers of the ylang-ylang tree, which are native to the Philippines and Indonesia. Steam distillation extracts the oil from the flowers in multiple batches. The first batch is extracted an hour after the process begins, resulting in the highest quality essential oil. Several other batches are extracted at different time intervals.

History

Ylang ylang has a long history, dating back to the fairytales of the Philippines. When a couple asks the gods to give them a child, they receive a daughter named Ylang on the condition that she never know the touch of a man. One day while picking flowers, a suitor takes her hand, causing her to vanish. When a small tree begins to grow where she stood, the suitor names it Ylang-Ylang. This love myth inspired young girls to wear ylang ylang petals and spread ylang ylang petals over the bed of newlyweds.

Medicinal Use

Ylang ylang also serves medicinal purposes. The oil is used to treat malaria and other infections, also it is good for calming stress and rapid heartbeat. In modern day, the oil is used for PMS, high blood pressure, depression, sleep disorders, and also anxiety.

History

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines aromatherapy as “the use of natural oils that have a pleasant smell to make a person feel better especially by rubbing the oils into the skin.” The use of essential oils for aromatherapy dates back over 6,000 year ago to Egyptian times, spreading quickly to Israel, Greece, and Rome. Throughout the entire Mediterranean region, essential oils were used in massages, burned in incense, and utilized as perfumes for their fragrant, energizing properties. Though the use of essential oils began to decline upon the arrival of modern science, a contemporary resurgence and enthusiasm has reignited the use of these naturally powerful oils.

Dry, dry skin. Itchy, itchy legs.

Every winter I go through this. In the summer I can use something as simple and easy to find as coconut oil to moisturize my legs. As soon as the temperature drops, though, my legs become unbearably itchy and dry. For years, I’ve had a constant search for the moisturizer, oil, or oil blend that will calm the skin and lock in more hydration.

I know all of the things you’re supposed to do for dry skin in winter–don’t shower every day, don’t use very hot water, don’t shave legs too often, do moisturize immediately after a shower or bath, do eat healthy fats, and so on and so forth.

I do all of these things! I have been doing them for years! I still feel like I need moisturizer 3 times a day on my legs…When I stopped using chemicals in my body products a few years ago, that alleviated a little bit of the problem, but it still persists.

HOWEVER! I may have found the antidote! I used this luxurious new USDA organic body oil from HollyBeth Organics once a day (at night) for a week, and after the 2 showers that I took that week as well. This made a HUGE difference! It’s a process, and I know that I need more time to heal the scratched skin, but I think I’m on the road to recovery
