Unesco has determined that argan oil (Moroccan oil) is currently under the threat from excessive human exploitation. Will the same thing happen to the karate tree that shea butter comes from? Having been to Morocco I have seen the straggly trees that the argan oil comes from with the goats that climb the tree to eat the berries. What concerns me are the trees. Both trees are endemic to their region. Karite trees will only grow in Africa, there have been attempts to grow them in Europe without success. Hopefully the argan tree will survive. It comes down to human consumption and in this case we are a culprit has we have a splash of argan oil in our hair and body silk.
